This seminar
course will introduce emerging architects to their professional potential as
public policy leaders, as well as designers of the public realm. A
critique of the architecture, planning, and environmental policies of Los
Angeles and the Southern California region will provide studied opportunities
for process engagement and an expanded design vocabulary. A different
topic exploration each week will be reviewed by visiting policy and design
experts, on evolving subjects such as the politics of aesthetics, affordable
housing, environmental and social justice, walkable/rideable cities, parking
policy, community empowerment through Land Use, health issues in planning and
design, historic preservation, and transit-oriented architecture and urban
design. Taught by architect and Los Angeles City Planning Commission
President, Bill Roschen, FAIA, and his partner, architect Christi VanCleve,
AIA, using current issues as context.

2) Civic engagement through student participation in public
meetings such as Neighborhood Councils, LA City Planning Commission/Area
Planning Commissions, and LA City Planning Department’s Urban Design Studio, as
well as through Woodbury University’s Architectural Center for Urban Policy.
3) City-wide progressive plans and Transit Corridor visions
